Your First 10 Days with Dexcom ONE

How do I keep my sensor on for the full 10-day wear?

Last Updated · February 1, 2022

Patch Adhesion
Dexcom sensors are manufactured with a special adhesive to help them stick to your skin after sensor insertion. However, skin types differ, and you may notice that your sensor patch begins to peel off before the end of your sensor session. Extra care may help you keep it on for the entire sensor session. Please also see your Dexcom product user guide for more information and instructions related to patch adhesion.

In addition, here are a few tips that diabetes educators have recommended to other Dexcom patients--you can reference them alongside your product instructions.

Before Sensor Insertion

Timing:
Skin types vary, and it may take time for the patch to fully dry and stick for some people. During that time, keep your skin dry and avoid engaging in activities that may make you sweat. If you insert a new sensor before bed, make sure the warmup period is complete before going to sleep.

Placement:
To help improve patch adhesion, make sure to not place it where your skin folds when you bend, where there is hair, and/or near your waistband. Additionally, you will want to change sites with every sensor session.

Preparation:
Your sensor site should be flat, clean, and completely dry before you insert the sensor. If you choose to use extra adhesive (such as Matisol or SkinTac), apply it under the patch, avoiding the spot where the needle inserts. Then, let dry.

Cleanliness tips:
- Remove any adhesive residue from previous sensors.
- Consider using an adhesive remover (such as Uni-solve, Detachol, or Tac Away).
- Clean and dry the sensor site twice: first, wash with soap and water and let dry. Then, scrub the site thoroughly with an alcohol wipe and let dry.

Sensor tips:
- If you just ended a sensor session, wait 10-15 minutes before starting a new session.
- Store your sensors in a dry place (between 36°-86° F)

Sensor insertion process instructions

Press and hold:
After removing the labels from the adhesive patch, press and hold the sensor applicator firmly to your skin–for about 30-60 seconds--to make the patch stick better. Then release the pressure before pushing the button to insert the sensor.

After inserting the sensor:
Rub the patch:
Immediately after sensor insertion, rub around the entire patch three times. For extra pressure, consider using the back of your fingernail. Smooth out any wrinkles in the patch.

Timing for medical tape or a Dexcom overpatch:
Use the overpatch or medical tape to keep the patch on your skin. If your skin has higher oil/moisture content, consider putting on the overpatch or medical tape immediately after inserting the sensor. If your skin is drier or less elastic, consider waiting to see if the patch edges peel off your skin before you put the overpatch or medical tape on over the adhesive. You can order free overpatches when ordering sensors on our website, or contact our Technical Support team for further information.
